    Description

WWII Instrument of Surrender Japan Original Facsimile Print Sept 2 1945 - RARE
Facsimile Print of the Instrument of Surrender of Imperial Japan Printed Aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, Tokyo Bay, Japan on September 2, 1945.
This unbound copy of the Instrument of Surrender is one of approximately sixty believed printed for General Officers and Dignitaries. It is printed on a special U.S. Federal Two-Star Eagle watermarked heavy stock.
The Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed on the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay during a short ceremony and broadcast with a statement worldwide. This facsimile copy was one of a limited number ordered printed for officer and dignitaries present aboard the U.S.S. Missouri during the ceremony. This particular copy was found in the estate of then Lt. Lawrence Sommer, liaison and communication officer U.S. Army Signal Corps aboard the Missouri on September 2, 1945.
    Provenance:
Col. Lawrence Sommer [Ret.] Liaison Officer Signal Corps US Army in Attendance of The Surrender of Japan aboard USS Missouri September 2, 1945.
This rare artifact of the signing is approximately 22" x 15" on heavy U. S. Special stock with Federal Army Eagle over two stars watermark on each page of the document. Of an estimated sixty to have been printed, approximately fifty were unbound, as such, and approximately ten were red-leather bound with embossed name for presentation.
Not surprisingly, few examples of these prized souvenirs have found their way into collectors' hands. Condition is very good with light aging, a few small tears, period rusted staple almost disconnected, and minor small creases at bottom corners - piece has been rolled a very long time and is difficult to flatten due to the nature of the paper and length of time it has been rolled.
The first page of content is a statement in English by the Japanese representatives, acting on behalf of the "the Emperor of Japan, the Japanese Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters", that they accept the provisions for Japan issued by the US, China and Britain at the Potsdam Conference of 26 July, 1945 and unconditionally surrender. The next page displays the signatures of Chief of the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff Yoshijiro Umezu and civilian plenipotentiary Mamoru Shigemitsu (both in Japanese), Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers Douglas MacArthur and United States Representative Admiral Chester Nimitz and other signatures of the representatives from the Republic of China, UK, USSR, the Commonwealth of Australia, the Dominion of Canada, the Provisional Government of the French Republic, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Dominion of New Zealand. The following page is an English translation of the proclamation of the Emperor Hirohito ordering the acceptance of the Potsdam Conference terms and the signing of the Instrument of Surrender in accordance with the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, along with a list of signers and counter signers made up of the then-serving Ministers of the Japanese government. The following page is the Japanese version of the above, bearing the seal of the Emperor, his signature and the signature of the heads of the Japanese government. The remaining four pages are made up of the Japanese language sealed authorizations by Hirohito, with English translations, for Shigemitsu and Umezu to sign the Instrument of Surrender on the Emperor's behalf.
